For many of us Texans, upscale country cookin’ meant Sunday afternoon supper at Aunt Sadie’s double-wide. And it was considered fancy if all the jelly jar iced tea glasses matched, and she had dishes with the latest pattern Green Stamps could buy. But all gay pretensions aside, the food was always fresh, flavorful and filled with heart and soul.
Just like Hattie’s. And no better time than Sunday brunch to rediscover this Bishop Arts gem.
Start with one of the best Bloody Marys in town, or a fresh top-shelf rocks Margarita. The latter is a bit on the pricey side compared to its bulk-made Tex-Mex counterparts, but the quality is apparent in every playfully puckering sip and we dare you not to order ten.
If you’re in a breakfast mood, the Hattie’s version of Eggs Benedict features plump crab cakes and a perfect hollandaise. Cornmeal Griddle Cakes will make you forever forget what the “P” stands for in IHOP (even though we’ll never forget that the “H” stands for homophobic).
For the tastebuds that are more wired for the “unch” side of brunch, try a satisfying twist on Hattie’s famous fried-green-tomato appetizer and hunker down with a sandwich version featuring fresh smoked mozzarella and roasted peppers. (It’s good enough to make you forget your lesbian crush on Mary Stuart Masterson.)
Or go for cheesy-carb indulgence with the savory low country shrimp and cheddar grits. The decadent mac-and-cheese is safest to get for the table to share, lest you eat the whole thing yourself and have a heart attack right on the spot.
But what a wonderful way to go.
