Cutting Out The Footwork

Obtain eastside-oriented nightlife with one call

Remember life before the Internet? Though history has yet to define the pre-web epoch with a fancy title, we remember it with one word in mind: horrifying. After all, once you go Skype-sex, you never go back. Truthfully, we don’t remember the era much at all, thank you very much sake bombs and strobe lights.

How did gays hook up before Skype? How did friends locate each other’s whereabouts before Loopt? How did Angelenos find out about unique, extraordinarily gay events before yours truly, Gay List Daily?

Even for our fermented neurons the answer is easy to remember: phone lines.

While gay “party lines” are experiencing a mild renaissance, a throwback to the underground clubbing era is actually holding its own in Los Angeles thanks to the Cut Foot Hotline.

Though somewhat “underground” itself, the hotline holds a wealth of artsy, under-the-radar information. Callers dial the number (so easy to remember we can recite it when we’re looking for something to do after drinking at Akbar) and are greeted by the arousing, deep-voiced Anthony Ausgang, who leaves a daily detailed message highlighting local (mainly east side) events.

Cut Foot was born a few years after before us – in the mid-80s – but has managed to survive despite text messaging, iPhones and the rest. Now if we could only get our new technologies working in concert to find the location of the seductive voice behind the hotline...
