Destination Desert or Downtown?

Triple D’s overshadow our weekend

You’d have to be living under a cock to not know that White Party occurs this weekend. The Mecca of hedonism is always a good bet, and boys from all over will be emptying gayborhoods as they make pilgrimage to Palm Springs. But of course, unlike us, our calendar is versatile, and includes plenty of L.A. selections for those still flip-flopping on their White Party weekend.

Carte Blanc
White Party 20th Anniversary: Superheroes
Through Monday (early morning), April 13

White Party – the one time of year we can wear all white and not burst into flames of blasphemy. It’s hard to think that the grand ol’ gay party in the desert turns 20 this year, which still might be kind of young compared to the crowds it hosts (though things are changing). Regardless of the venue (the Wyndham, the Convention Center) or the hot headliners (Lady Gaga, Erasure’s Andy Bell), the classic weekend is the only other occasion (aside from a Madonna concert) that transforms West Hollywood into an Old West ghost town.

Breathe and Take It All In
Downtown Art Walk
Today, Noon – 9:00 p.m.

The amount of worthwhile galleries downtown has reached an overwhelming proportion (though, for the record, we can typically accommodate any proportion as long as a cocktail is involved). In the effort of accessibility and good times, the monthly Downtown Art Walk takes visitors on a tour of the city’s bustling art core. If the wine is flowing, we might give visitors a tour of our core afterwards, too…

The Surreal Stage
Die Walküre
Through Saturday, April 25

There aren’t many of our cherries left to pop, but seeing world-renowned actor Plácido Domingo on stage is one of them. Thankfully, the latest offering from the LA Opera opened last week and features the star taking on the role of Siegmund in Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre. Achim Freyer directs and art-designs the production, which means we’re expecting a high level of innovative stage value (think a Guillermo del Torro film live).

Tickets: $20 - $250

White Party Apéritif
Meet the Museum
Friday, April 10, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

If it takes a few more cocktails before you begin to consider your fellow White Party revelers works of art, head on over to the Palm Springs Art Museum to take in some real artwork. Hot bartenders from Mark’s will be on hand as well as DJ Victor Rodriguez, but it’s the opportunity for guests to take Pop Art Photos of themselves home that’s the real winner; after all, it’ll probably be the last decent picture we’re able to take for the rest of the weekend.

Admission: $50; $85 for two tickets; $40 for members

Feel the Fallout
Radioactive: A Dance Party with KCRW
Saturday, April 11, 9:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.

Do you prefer having shorter time limits on the dance floor? Keeps you out of trouble? For those who remain in town this weekend but still want to dance the night away, the world-famous KCRW is hosting a dance party downtown, featuring their acclaimed roster of DJs tackling the decks. Maybe this year we can get some quality dancing in and still remember Easter.

Tickets: $45 at the door
