Pee-wee Premieres!

High camp returns to lowbrow culture

The last time a huge 80’s hit made a comeback on LA's stage, it was when Jeff Stryker starred in a one-man show a few years back. Nearly quite as satiating is Pee-wee Herman's return to pop culture, beginning tonight in downtown L.A.

Our fabulous addiction to all things camp didn't come naturally, as it might have for others of the gay persuasion; instead, it was cultivated weekly and delicately by Pee-wee's Playhouse.

Pee-wee turned us on to a lot of things we have carried with us through life, but latino lifeguards, friendly relationships with household appliances, words of the day and, later in life, naughty theaters, are the first things to come to our Mary minds.

And now we're excited to see what else the affable character turns us on to. After all, we've been eagerly waiting since last year when the stage show was first announced, scheduled to run in November of 2009. News of Pee-wee's and the entire Playhouse Gang's return caused a hysteria unseen in the gayborhood since Lady Gaga appeared unannounced at club Voyeur.

The better-than-expected, overwhelming response required a spacier venue to host the bigger and better Pee-Wee (something about that phrase arouses us), and voila, the revamped show starts tonight, for four weeks, at Club Nokia!

Not much has been divulged about what fans can expect from the stage show, though we can tell you to expect Pee-wee's trademark humor and style, along with appearances from most of the original Playhouse gang and a few special guests.

The mystery is OK; we've been waiting 20 years for this, we can muster up uncharacteristic patience for a few more hours...
