P.S., We Love You

The Palm Springs International Film Festival begins today

Palm Springs was once regarded as where gays go to die (while looking flawless, might we add). But in the past decade, the little desert town has become known for where gays go to live, darlings.

Perhaps it's White Party or PS Pride or the slew of hot young pool boys worth driving a few hours east that have injected youth (something we're very familiar with) into the city, but we like to think the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) plays a large role in the locale's re-burgeoning effervescence.

Like our tolerance for double martinis, the PSIFF seems to grow every year. And because the event takes place in arguably one of the gayest cities on the planet (hello, Liberace called the city home!), the roster of films screened there always includes a bounty of LGBT cinematic achievements.

This year, for example, the PSIFF's Gay!La screening (its largest annual LGBT screening/party) boasts the highly-anticipated I Love You Phillip Morris, starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor (pictured). Some have touted the film as Brokeback Mountain with the Montana countryside replaced with a prison setting, and that's all we need to know to have us rushing to the car to head to Palm Springs.

The rainbow spectrum of LGBT films screened at the PSIFF includes roughly 20 other entries, such as the world premieres of Paulista (a hot Brazilian film following three people's search for love) and Is It Just Me, the North American premiere of Dzi Croquettes (a Brazilian film about an all-male Ziegfeld Follies-esque dance troupe banned by military dictatorship), and the US premiere of Plan B.

Though plenty of after parties take place at infamous gay bars within the Coachella valley, this might actually be the first gay outing to Palm Springs we'll be able to remember. Might.
