Salvaging Style, Risking Safety

It’s our duty to expose the hidden treasures at Santa Fe Wrecking Company

Know of a great city to relocate to from Los Angeles? We have until next week to choose, so say the head honchos over at the witness protection program.

No, we haven’t witnessed any crimes (although this neo-parachute-pants trend is cutting it close), but we’re soon to be in serious need of hiding. Once we divulge this secret, the city’s design divas will be after us: Santa Fe Wrecking is the place to go for one-of a kind home design finds.

There, we said it. If you don’t hear from us tomorrow, we’d like to be remembered as drop-dead gorgeous.

Designers from the city-over keep the downtown architectural salvage yard behind tight lips. But we’ve always had a way of prying those babies open. Once they slip to reveal the salvage yard’s name, the details follow. Word is clawfoot tubs, chandeliers, rustic doors and everything in between await discovery downtown.

The prices may seem unremarkable at first. But the yard’s workers are prone to negotiations.

Last week we found an art deco vanity at the yard which screams Hollywood. We haggled the price down to an affordable $300 before spotting an end table, collection of door handles and a shelving unit that would suit our insatiable design needs. After spending an afternoon browsing and haggling, we left empty-handed, too crazed with antique goodness to make up our minds.

And, though their styles are more refined, interior-decorating’s brightest stars surely leave Santa Fe Wrecking feeling crazy, too. This is exactly why we can’t continue to gush about the hidden gems resting in the salvage yard. We’ve gotta pack.
