Taking One From The Team

Capture the flag takes over West Hollywood

The one thing we exceeded at when forced onto the field during youth football was running. No matter our opinions of the every-child-must-play-once-during-each-game rule (it amounts to torture), when our sneakers touched the eerie fake turf, we bolted, screaming, usually all the way back to the safety of our bedroom closets.

But the sports renaissance in WeHo has been relentless, and another of its incarnations – Andrew Oldershaw’s and Will Hackner’s capture the flag – thrusts sweaty, gorgeous athletes into local bars and parties once the irregularly occurring Sunday game is over.

Have you noticed the hot young twenty-somethings with eye black streaks on their cheeks? Catching a glimpse of the post-game athletes will either deliver you directly to the Nirvana of your sports fantasies, or have you, like us 20 10 years ago, running and screaming back to the closet in fits of post-gymatic-stress nostalgia.

Never ones to turn down group action, we researched the new monthly phenomenon and decided that we simply heart capture the fag.

Players arrive at Pan Pacific Park at a reasonable Sunday hour (usually no earlier than 11:00 a.m.) and have a brief moment to drink coffee or booze while sizing the other team up, which is why we always keep measuring tape in our gym bags. The nostalgic schoolyard game then ensues for a few hours at a rougher – and gayer – pace than it did on the blacktop.

And like black tops, capture the fag flag is everything we’re looking for. Sure, we already spend our Sunday afternoons drunk and chasing hot gay ass, but now we’ve found an organization that gives us points for doing so.
