The (End Of) Winter Games

It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday

Winter’s over tomorrow, and if it’s hard to tell by now, we’re excited. Not that Los Angeles winters are formidable by any means; we simply like the warmer months when the three B’s are all that are on our minds: boys, bathing suits and beaches. But as professional drama queens (we were crowned Miss Drama Queen 1998 2006 in high school), we’re prepared to give a long, teary-eyed goodbye to winter. Helping us out are the unofficial gay sporting events of said season: a gay ski weekend gets hot up north and world championship ice skating brings it to town.

Snow Balls
Elevation Weekend
Through Sunday, March 22

We want to make the short trek up to Mammoth this weekend for the annual gay ski events, but if we can’t, Tom Whitman’s pansy party in the snow teases the boys out of WeHo, turning the gayborhood into a ghost town. It’s a tough decision between snow balls and having WeHo to ourselves, so we could go both ways. (Not in a bi kind of way; tried that, didn’t work.)

Blades of Glory Holes
World Skating Championships
Sunday, March 22 – Sunday, March 29

C’mon. Come out of the closet. In 2009, it’s perfectly acceptable to be proud of your figure skating addiction. What better venue to show your love for the sport than at the World Skating Championships, which lands in sunny downtown Los Angeles beginning Sunday. Just as you were getting used to having extra room in West Hollywood thanks to the mass migration to Elevation, the queens from the skating world arrive. But we’re all about unitards and quads, so we won’t complain.

“All-Events” tickets range from $235 – $2270
Events take place at Staples and the Convention Center, Downtown

Pranking Playwrights
The Unscripted Tennessee Williams
Opens Friday, March 20, 8:00 p.m., through Sunday, April 26

If improv was a sport, critics might hand the title to the Impro Theatre Company. The group describes itself as the Royal Shakespeare Company meets Whose Line is it Anyway? and we’ve been impatiently awaiting their improv treatment of Tennessee Williams. They may not be hot Brando or Jessica Tandy, but we bet they’ll keep our attention on the stage…

Tickets: $20

Center Stage
S.T.A.G.E. Benefit
Saturday, March 21, 8:00 p.m. & Sunday, March 22, 3:00 p.m.

The annual Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event alleges to be the world’s longest running AIDS benefit. For the 25th edition, audiences can expect performances in tribute of the Gershwin Brothers, with appearances by Kimberley Locke and Bruce Vilanch (as well as countless others). We have a thing for watching 25 year olds perform…

Tickets: $30 - $75
