The Queen of L.A.’s Screens

Hollywood’s oldest film festival gears up for us queers

For most of the year, celebrating the gay film industry means a visit to Studs Theater, followed by a week’s worth of hot, frantic showering. Then in July, we’re reminded that the other gay film industry – the one that doesn’t require plastic-covering on theater seats during screenings – is just as vibrant and vital to the LGBT community as San Fernando’s finest flicks.

Enter Outfest, arguably L.A.’s classiest gift to gay cinema, and the world’s foremost LGBT film festival.

Sure, we’re still recovering from Pride (we were exceptionally Proud, some might say), but in this h8ful climate, numerous gay celebrations certainly can’t hurt.

For 2009, Outfest has Outdone itself, we believe. Its list of films is more expansive and diverse than Kevin Bacon’s IMDB page, but there are still a few highlights that shine brighter than the ones we donned in the 90s:

  • Sandra Bernhard’s Without You I’m Nothing
  • The 40th anniversary screening of Before Stonewall (free!)
  • Q&A panels with the creative teams behind our new favorite, Glee, and our old standby, Big Love
  • World premieres of films, including Pornography, Fish out of Water and Lucky Bastard

The 10 days of watching outstanding queer film may hurt our neck more than the 10 days we spent in a P-town bathhouse, but just like it did then, opening our throats a bit will give our necks a break from the stunning entertainment. At Outfest, the chance (and our favorite part of the festival) to put our throats to use comes at the annual sing-a-long, which this year occurs to the tune of Funny Girl.

Sure, it might take a little time to get used to watching gay flicks that aren’t pay-by-the-minute, but the expertly picked films at Outfest are sure to make us just as proud.

Outfest runs from Thursday, July 9 – Sunday, July 19
