A Few Coats Of Primer

Adding the final layer to fall/winter wardrobes

The decision is never easy. When the temperature has dropped below 50 degrees and appearing shirtless at social functions starts to seem unreasonable, the many components involved in wardrobe layering make it difficult to decide on any singular piece. But, as our general rule in life states, we should just pay the most attention to the top.

For the fall/winter, thankfully there are a few good outer layers around that make us feel just as sexy decked in clothing from head to toe as we did dancing on South Beach in nothing more than a sarong in August. Three of our favorite top layer coats for the cold months are:

Monitaly's Riders Coat
While literal interpretations of the holidays through fashion rarely work (see your mother-in-civil-union’s green and red sweater with glue-gunned bells), Monitaly has created an acceptable (and appealing) balance in its new riders coat. If a punk band had been drafted into the British Military to fight a special battle against the Grinch, this fabulous coat might be their choice of armor. As fans of versatility, we adore the collar both up and down.

A.P.C.'s Classic Duffle Coat
Classical styles, when done right, soar. A.P.C. rarely gets them wrong. If you're looking to make a sophisticated, polished mark this winter, the brand's take on a classic duffle coat would be a good place to start. Featuring large fasteners (easy to find and clasp with cold, gloved hands) and a comfortable wool/nylon mix that's both lightweight and warm, we might save money on coat check fees this winter because we want to wear it to the party!

Arc'Teryx Veilance's Field Jacket
Looking like we've stepped out of a Lady Gaga video from 2012 isn't the top item on our list when it comes to functional outerwear. Something about wearing a gold-plated frock with ergonomically-shaped shoulder pads doesn't really shield us from the rain. But the field jacket from Arc'Teryx Veilance (a mouthful, but you know how we feel about those) is masculine, fashion-forward and useful. It's pricey, but it's cutting-edge and sex on fabric. Consider it a holiday gift to yourself.
