When Joey Married Bobby debuts in the East Village
Those involved in straight marriages have enough hurdles to jump. But marriage for us gays requires even higher hurdles, thanks to all that legal b.s.
Luckily we do enough walking lunges and faithfully attend each week’s Bikram Yoga course to barely clear what they demand.
While the federal Prop 8 trial no longer takes center stage, another (campier) production regarding gay marriage assumes one – When Joey Married Bobby.
The East Village production opened on Sunday but has piqued our play-loving palates since last month. We first heard about the show through Lady Bunny, who co-stars as a Baptist Minister’s wife, which is actually quite fitting.
While the iconic wig certainly draws our asses into the theater, the deliciously buff Matthew Pender (pictured) – who stars as the titular (as in huge, hairy pecs) Joey – makes our booties tingle once they’re seated. Oh, and yes boys, he’s a pitcher (well at least was – he pitched for the Detroit Tigers. Seriously!).
Penned by GLAAD Award-winning playwright William Wyatt (Peachtree Battle, A Sunday Afternoon At Loehmans, The Limousine Ride and Veranda), When Joey Married Bobby puts the audience in the middle of Joey’s ultra-conservative household at the moment he’s decided to marry the man of his dreams.
Problem is our star’s southern socialite mother (hilariously portrayed by two-time S.A.G. Award nominee Tina McKissick), who thinks an abomination like a gay wedding will ruin her run for “Christian of the Year.”
If the play’s synopsis isn’t enough, what about the notion of an open-end filled by a hot former pro-baseball stud? Yea, we thought so.
