Cupcakes man up at Butch Bakery

When you think baked goods or pastries, you think butch, right? Not Jane Cleaver donning a frilly gold lamé apron? Turning us upside down (which is a new position for us, believe it or not) is the newly-launched cupcake confectioner Butch Bakery.

It’s no secret that we enjoy putting a butch thing in our mouth from time to time, but these liqueur-infused cupcakes really take the cake (sorry).

Available in Manhattan-Queens-Brooklyn by delivery only (it’s merely a matter of time before Butch Bakery lands in brick and mortar), Butch Bakery boasts a dozen different varieties of artisan cupcake – a relentless trend that hasn’t ebbed for over 10 years.

But like all things Sex and the City, we follow the trend to a T. Thankfully Butch allows us to kill two SATC trends with one rhinestone: cupcakes and cocktails.

Inspired by the lush (literally) landscape of the city, Butch varieties include the old-fashioned (orange-soaked whisky cake, lemon curd filling), the mojito (rum-soaked lime cake, mint white chocolate ganache), and the home run (peanut butter cake, banana Bavarian crème and bacon bits!).

But if the sound of those instant hits have left you unconvinced, others, granted even butcher names like the driller (maple cake, milk chocolate ganache and bacon bits) and the big papi (cinnamon spice cake, dulce de leche filling), should do the trick better than we did last week.

Just as arousing as these cupcakes with a twist are the masculine decorative toppings Butch adds to each confection. From houndstooth to camouflage to wood, the innuendos are priceless – and the cupcakes nearly are too: $48 for a dozen, plus $8 in shipping.

In a city still overly-concerned with a renaissance of masculinity in the post-metrosexual era (think the logger/lumberjack epidemic afflicting Williamsburg), the treats from Butch are the perfect distance we’re willing to go to reclaim our manlier sides – as long as we don’t have to reclaim our girlish figures anytime soon.
