They Say Once You Go Green You Never Go Back

Can you hear the eco? Eco, Eco…

It’s almost back to school time, so let’s remember to think about the three R’s. In 2008, that’s Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. This week, we’ve dug up with some green options which don’t require many greenbacks. It’s hydroponic, it’s macrobiotic. Why it’s so darn eco-friendly out there, you may just turn into tofu!

Pound the Pavement of Park Avenue
Summer Streets NYC
Saturday, August 23, 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

There are people. All sorts of people. On the street! Are they looting? The wealthy matrons along Park Avenue are definitely cringing behind the penthouse locks and keys this Saturday when Summer Streets closes off Park Avenue to all vehicular traffic. Here’s your chance to take over Park Avenue on your own power. Bike, walk, run, try a cartwheel. Dance with your baby in the summer rain. Park Avenue is yours. All yours! But remember: it all ends when the clock strikes one, Cinderfella.

Slap me some skin!
World Wrestling Entertainment
Saturday August 23, 7:30 p.m.

Chemical warfare releases deadly toxins into the air. Gunfire, too, most probably. So go ahead and release all that manly aggression instead, vicariously, with wrestle-mania! At Madison Square Garden this weekend, they pit man boobs versus bare hands in throw down tournaments such as the Steel Cage, Raw Challenge, and the Intercontinental Championships. With all that sweaty body slamming and hot skin-on-skin action, you may just activate your own improvised explosive device!

Tickets: $30 - $80

Respect your black Mama, white girl!
Imitation of Life
Tuesday, August 26, 8:00 p.m.

Which queen doesn’t live within a Douglas Sirk film? We’re both equally melodramatic! Sit down on the lawn and cry your eyes out as Lana Turner and Juanita Moore deal with rejection, race relations, and (for melodramatic purposes, of course) super-stardom! What, you may ask, does Lana Turner have to do with protecting fair Mother Earth? Silly queen, besides the falsies, lovely Lana is now 100% biodegradable.

Waterfalls inhabit the urban jungle!
New York City Waterfalls Circle Line Tour
Falls operate from 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. daily

Christo? Jeanne-Claude? The New York Waterfalls smells of those saffron gates from Central Park, but the installations in the East River are the work of Danish artist Olafur Eliasson (say that five times really fast) who has developed four electrically charged waterfalls (between 90 and 120 feet) designed to protect water quality and aquatic life.

The Circle Line offers 30 minute boat tours several times a day, but for an even more environmentally (and financially) sound visit, skip the tour. The falls are strategically placed to be visible from the end of South Street Seaport.

And while we really appreciate the beautifying the New York City landscape, can one of these artists do something for Canal Street? Please?

Bus ticket: $10
About 14 trips per day (consult website for departure times)
Waterfall tours depart from Pier 16, in the South Street Seaport
